Work opportunities

The Chartered Architectural Technologist (MCIAT) is a vital component within the construction process and is complementary to the architect and other professionals associated with the construction industry. Many Chartered Architectural Technologists elect to set up their own practices or work in partnership or as a director with fellow Chartered Architectural Technologists, architects and other professionals associated with the construction industry.

Professional Architectural Technicians (TCIAT) are an integral part of the construction process, supporting Chartered Architectural Technologists, architects and other professionals associated with the construction industry. Many Architectural Technicians are aiming to develop and enchance their skills to become Chartered Architectural Technologists.

In terms of your future career, qualification as a Chartered Architectural Technologist or a professional Architectural Technician opens many doors. Whilst Chartered Architectural Technologists and professional Architectural Technicians traditionally practise within architectural practices and local authorities, a growing number are applying their skills within research and academia as well as manufacturing and processing industries, housing, health and government agencies.

They can be involved in projects of all types such as commercial, industrial or residential, whether it is adaptation, conservation, conversion, maintenance, management, new build or restoration.

For work opportunities and advice contact your local recruitment agency.

Opportunities to work during holidays and placement years are extremely valuable in terms of experience and finance. Such opportunities can be found through recruitment agencies, CIAT publications (website, magazine and newsletters), other industry magazines and possibly your course tutor.

What you should look for in a work opportunity is that your supervisor/line manager will support you and mentor your progress. Ideally, the work you do should link to your professional development through the CIAT Professional and Occupational Performance Record (POP Record) so that you can get a head start on your progression to either a Chartered Architectural Technologist or a professional Architectural Technician. In this case, assuming that these positions are short term, you should ensure that your Results Schedule is signed and that you will have access to the appropriate evidence at a later date.

Supporting work placements  - This guide is designed to assist members of the Institute, when providing work placements for a student considering a career as a Chartered Architectural Technologist, MCIAT or professional Architectural Technician, TCIAT.
