What is an Accredited Honours degree?
Accreditation awarded by CIAT demonstrates that the Architectural Technology Honours degree has been assessed in terms of content, structure and resources, against standards set by the Institute. The Accreditation is to provide assurance that you will be able to develop your academic, analytical, communication and employability skills.
Honours degree programmes are initially Accredited in Principle for a maximum period of five years. The Honours degree is then reviewed for Accreditation.
Choosing to study on an Accredited Honours degree will be an advantage as you will receive exemptions against your Professional and Occupational Performance (POP) Records. For full details on these, please click here.
What is the difference between Accreditation in Principle and Accreditation?
Accreditation in Principle is awarded on the basis of a paper exercise and is an assessment, against the Institute’s criteria, of documentation provided by the university regarding its Honours degree in Architectural Technology. The university will hold Accreditation in Principle for a maximum of five years, and will be visited by a Panel of CIAT representatives to upgrade to Accreditation. This visit to the university to examine students’ work, meet staff, students and employees concentrates on the outputs of the degree programme and students. Upon successful completion, the university will be awarded Accreditation for a period of five years. It is then re-Accredited every five years thereafter.
Why isn’t my university Accredited by CIAT?
It is not a requirement for universities to achieve Accreditation by CIAT, and it is for the individual university to apply. The university may be in the stages of applying or is not ready to apply for Accreditation in Principle.
What if my university isn’t Accredited?
If your university is not Accredited by CIAT, then the Architectural Technology programme will not have been examined against the knowledge and performance output requirements for a Chartered Architectural Technologist. This will mean that when you are pursuing your membership of CIAT, you will not receive the automatic exemptions within the POP Record. However, you can still apply for membership and CIAT’s Membership Department will advise you on this.
All universities, that are listed, offer both full and part time programmes except for University of Huddersfield, Liverpool John Moores, Nottingham Trent University, The University of Plymouth and University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
