CIAT Accreditation demonstrates that a university’s Architectural Technology Honours degree programme has been assessed in terms of content, structure and resources. It also provides assurances that students will be able to develop their academic, analytical, communication and employability skills.
CIAT Accreditation allows certain exemptions when progressing to Chartered Membership of CIAT (MCIAT).
Honours degree programmes are initially Accredited in Principle for five years. They are then reviewed for Accreditation.
All universities offer both full and part time programmes except for University of Huddersfield, Leeds Metropolitan University, Liverpool John Moores, Nottingham Trent University, The University of Plymouth and Highlands College.
Whilst on an Accredited course it is recommended that students also take out CIAT student membership, which is free.
What is the difference between Accreditation in Principle and Accredited?
When an Architectural Technology Honours degree programme is Accredited in Principle by the Institute, the status is granted on the basis of a paper exercise which is an assessment of documentation provided by the university. The university will become Accredited in Principle for a period of five years. When the status of Accredited in Principle is due to expire, a panel of CIAT representatives will then visit the university to examine work, to meet staff, student and employees and to concentrate on the outputs of the degree programme. If successful, the university becomes a CIAT Accredited educational establishment. After another five years, the university then undertakes an Accreditation Review and retains the Accredited status.
Why isn’t my university Accredited by CIAT?
Universities are not required to be CIAT Accredited. It is up to the individual university to apply for Accreditation. It maybe that the university is in the stages of applying for or not ready to apply for Accreditation.
What happens if my university isn’t Accredited by CIAT?
If your university is not Accredited, then the Architectural Technology programme will not have been examined in terms of appropriate knowledge and performance output requirements for a Chartered Architectural Technologist. You will also not receive automatic exemptions within the POP Record. You may still apply for student or Associate membership but you will need to demonstrate your underpinning knowledge against CIAT’s Performance Standards.
