To start your career to become a Chartered Architectural Technologist it is recommended that you gain an Honours degree in Architectural Technology. To help you find somewhere to study Architectural Technology, the Institute Accredits Honours degrees to assist you in your search.
What is an Accredited Honours degree?
Accreditation awarded by CIAT shows that the Architectural Technology Honours degree has been assessed for its content, structure and resources, against standards set by the Institute. The Accreditation is there to assure you that you will develop your academic, analytical, communication and employability skills.
An Accredited Honours degree will also be an advantage for when you progress your membership of CIAT as you will receive exemptions against your Professional and Occupational Performance (POP) Records.
What is the difference between Accreditation in Principle and Accreditation?
Accreditation in Principle is awarded on the basis of a paper exercise and is an assessment, against the Institute’s standards, of documentation provided by the university. If successful, the university will hold Accreditation in Principle for five years or a period agreed by the CIAT Accreditation Group, and will be visited by a Panel of CIAT representatives to upgrade to Accreditation. This visiting Panel examines students’ work and concentrates on the outputs of the degree programme and its students. If successful, the university will be awarded Accreditation for a period of five years. It is then re-Accredited every five years thereafter.
If you graduate from a programme that is Accredited in Principle, you will receive exemptions against your Professional and Occupational Performance (POP) Record in the same way that graduates from an Accredited programme do.
Why isn’t my university Accredited by CIAT?
It is not a requirement for any university to achieve Accreditation from CIAT, and it is for the individual university to apply. The university may be in the stages of applying or is not ready to apply for Accreditation in Principle.
What if my university isn’t Accredited?
If your university is not Accredited by CIAT, then the Architectural Technology programme will not have been examined against the required standards. This will mean that when you are pursuing your membership of CIAT, you will not receive the exemptions within the POP Record.
All universities listed offer both full and part time programmes except for University of Huddersfield, Liverpool John Moores, Nottingham Trent University, The University of Plymouth and University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
