Lau Sun House, London wins CIAT Alan King Prize 2007 for Kyson Design
CIAT has awarded its Alan King Prize to Scott Kyson MCIAT of Kyson Design, for Lau Sun House, London.
The Award, named after the first Chairman of CIAT, is specifically designed to recognise technical excellence in construction on a budget of less than £500,000 through illustrating the composition of ideas put into practice and presented in a working format.
The Award, which includes a certificate, a plaque for permanent attachment to the project and a cheque for £1500, was presented to Scott Kyson MCIAT at the CIAT Presidents’ Annual Dinner Dance in Manchester on 17 November.
Announcing the winner, CIAT’s Vice-President Technical, Andrew Scott MCIAT said ‘the house has been designed to fit within an extremely restricted rear garden in Hackney. The dimensions of the available site has encouraged the Chartered Architectural Technologist to use innovative construction and detailing to produce a dwelling of high quality. ’
The judge's full comments
The house which forms the subject of this award has been designed to fit within an extremely restricted rear garden site in Hackney, London.
The party walls are common with four adjacent landowners and the house is overlooked on almost all of its four elevations. Careful design and specification has overcome the overlooking and security issues.
The dimensions of the available site has encouraged the Chartered Architectural Technologist to use innovative construction and detailing to produce a dwelling of high quality. The careful selection of insulation materials has allowed the Chartered Architectural Technologist to keep elements of the external envelope to minimal dimensions, while exceeding the requirements of the Building Regulations.
The judges felt that this was a very good example of excellence in Architectural Technology overcoming considerable site constraints to allow development of a site that could not have been otherwise developed.
The judges were Andrew Scott MCIAT, Vice-President Technical and Mark Kennett MCIAT, President-Elect.
