Gold Award 2007

Golden glory for CIAT

The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) awarded seven Members the 2007 Gold Award at its Presidents’ Annual Dinner Dance in Manchester on 17 November.

The Gold Award is the Institute’s method of recognising a member’s outstanding service or commitment to Architectural Technology through the Institute, industry or Region/Centre, and is an essential method of awarding individuals who may not normally be recognised.

This year the Gold Award was presented to:

Robert Bilbie MCIAT for dedicated service to the construction industry

Robert has promoted the benefits of energy efficient design for a number of years by being continually pro-active in this field of construction. He has brought credit to our Institute in this respect and his CV speaks for itself.

Whilst promoting his own practice, he has always found time to be involved in training others, serving on Taskforces etc. Throughout the construction industry, both in East Anglia and beyond, his views are sought and listened to, which brings continual credit to CIAT.

Liam Cotter MCIAT for dedicated service to the Republic of Ireland Centre

William (Liam) has performed the office of Regional Treasurer for the Republic of Ireland Centre for eleven years and has administered the finances of the Centre with diligence and care. He has given consistent and devoted service to the Centre and Institute.

He has continually promoted the interests of CIAT and Architectural Technology in Ireland through his professional practice and his Committee work.

Adrian Day MCIAT for dedicated to the Central Region

Adrian became a member of the Institute on 15 May 1977. He was Honorary Secretary for the Region from 1984-89, then became Chairman and continues to be a committed and active member of the Central Region in various posts.

He has been the Chairman of the Central Region for the last seventeen years and has provided a very reliable and trustworthy guidance and leadership to the Regional Committee. Previous to this, he had acted and voted as Deputy for National Councillor.

He was the lead in organising the Central Region hosting of the Institute’s AGM in Milton Keynes and Woburn Abbey and has been active in organising CPD events across the Region.

Adrian has attended many national AGMs as elected voting member for the Region and has been very instrumental in the organisation of our Biennial General Meetings.

Additionally, Adrian has generated interest amongst grass-root and younger members in the Region to serve on the Committee and support an expanding CPD programme.

Iain Elmslie MCIAT for dedicated service to the Institute and North West Region

Iain was among the first year of Technicians (as they were then) to emerge from the Technicians architecture course in Manchester, established by Professor Denis Harper. Iain helped to form the North West Region (Manchester Chapter) on 1 March 1965 and acted as Chapter (Regional) Secretary.

Iain is only one of the four remaining official founding members of the Institute from 12 February 1965, along with George Lowe PCSAAT MCIAT, Bruce Sheerin HonMCIAT PCSAAT MCIAT and Tony Lodge PCSAAT MCIAT.

Iain was the very first National Education Committee Chairman (now titled Vice-President Education) until 1967 when the role was taken over by one of the Institute’s legends, John Newey. Iain then became part of the Steering Committee, which was responsible for establishing SAAT. Iain also wrote and compiled the first Regional Education Officer’s Handbook.

Iain was the Institute’s representative to the joint SAAT/RIBA Education Committee from 1969-70 and also sat on the Examinations Board (1987-88) and the Membership and Education Committee from 1965-70.

Harry Johnston MCIAT for dedicated service to the Northern Ireland Region

Harry has been a member since 1983 and heavily involved with the Regional Committee for over twenty years. He has served as Regional Secretary and has been Regional Chairman from 1998.

Harry is heavily involved with Professional College CIC Northern Ireland. He has served as Honorary Secretary and is now Chairman.

His dedication and professionalism on behalf of CIAT has been outstanding and we have no reason to doubt that this will ever cease.

One of the Institute’s stalwarts.

Gary Mees MCIAT for dedicated service to the Institute and Scotland East Region

Gary has provided outstanding service at both Regional and Council levels. Together with a commitment to external bodies, notably service with the Scottish Building Standards Agency.

Gary served as Regional Councillor between 1996-99, on the Consultative Panel 1999-00 and 2002-03, the Innovation and Research Committee 1996-99, Technical Committee 1986-96 and 1998-03 and as Vice-President Technical 1993-03.

Henry Spence MCIAT for dedicated service to the Yorkshire Region

Henry has been a member of the Institute since 1983 and since then he has been an active and supportive Committee member.

Henry has been responsible for organising joint CPD events with CIOB and has used his contacts to promote CIAT at a Regional level and he has used the same contacts for CPD work — Yorkshire Region would be the poorer without Henry.

The award winners receive a medal, lapel badge and certificate.
