Case study

Carol Alderton MCIAT

I started in the architectural sector in 1966 as a Drawing Office Assistant. During the years from then to my qualification as a Chartered Architectural Technologist with CIAT, I learned the trade onsite and in various drawing offices. At this time I was one of a very few women employed in the trade.

I am at present employed by Cambridgeshire County Council in their Special Projects Team. We are mostly employed in the renovation and extension of schools with a special emphasis on alterations to bring the schools up to standard with regards to the Disability Discrimination Act, involving the installation of hygiene rooms, physiotherapy rooms, ramps and incorporating improvements for the visually and auditory impaired.

I am also part of the team working on a ‘ Model School ‘ project, who’s brief is to produce a standard specification for schools in Cambridgeshire, taking into consideration issues such as renewable energy and sustainability.
