Case study

Lisa Jackson ACIAT

I remember my first day at university when I went into a room full of people and only saw a handful of girls. To be honest I knew that there would be a small number of girls but I was pleasantly surprised with the amount I did see. I guessed more and more girls were realising its not all about mud and dirt! It didn't matter though as everyone got on and helped each other out.

My degree programme followed a lot of different modules, from technology, environmental science, project design to CAD work. The degree allowed me to experience a number of varying skills such as practical site visits and measures, group work and brainstorming, designing and computer work, as well as solving logical problems to structural calculations and technology issues. I enjoyed the courses and although they seemed to be very different from each other, they were all linked together which helped when doing coursework and exams.

The practice I work for is a small family run business that deals with a wide range of works including residential buildings, commercial buildings, DDA works for library's, museums and colleges, to planned maintenance works for housing associations.

The range of work allows me to have a wide level of experience in site visits and measures, design proposals, planning permission and building regulation applications, plan maintenance surveys, DDA compliance, liasing with clients, contractors and consultants, writing schedule of works, tendering and contracts, to the supervision of building works. I enjoy my work as it is interesting and it changes from project to project.
