Case study

Colin Freestone MCIAT

Handsketch

My career as a Chartered Architectural Technologist is currently in the very interesting and exciting position of establishing my own architectural design company. Freestone Design Limited is a small architectural design consultancy concentrating mainly in the field of residential property for both private domestic clients and developers.

My intention is to remain a sole practitioner concentrating on small building projects where I can offer a professional and conscientious service which can be tailored to the needs of individual clients. I provide guidance on all aspects of residential building design, assisting in maximising space for individual circumstances and property value combined with care and thought for the neighbouring and ecological environment. An overall integrated design approach to buildings, interiors and landscape.

Some of my current projects include;

  • A residential development of two new 4 bedroom detached houses which I have designed to form a courtyard development encompassing an existing large detached Edwardian House, enhancing its position as a focal point in the street scene.
  • A ‘self-build’ project comprising a large house extension with new roof including master and guest bedrooms with en-suites in the loft space and alterations of the existing small detached 1920’s bungalow to give final accommodation totalling 210sq. m. (2240sq. ft.).

I have over twenty five years experience in the construction industry, starting as a Trainee Architectural Technician in 1977. I have previously enjoyed working for a number of local architectural practices in the East Midlands; Derby, Burton upon Trent and Nottingham.

I also have several years experience working in the group design team at the head office of a major national housing developer where a highlight of my career was to be involved as technical co-ordinator for the construction of the Eco-House for the School of the Built Environment at the University of Nottingham. My involvement, working for the construction team, was to provide the technical link with the university staff and their specialist suppliers for rainwater harvesting, photovoltaic roof tiles, solar water heating and other innovative technologies.

My interest in this area of the construction industry has remained.  I have kept up to date with CPD in the use of ‘green’ building materials and renewable energy technologies, and now, particularly with rising utility bills, I am finding a number of clients value my knowledge and expertise.

To enable me to provide clients with additional advice in the area of low energy and thermal efficiency, and to extend my portfolio of services in the residential sector, I am currently working through the Diploma in Home Inspection.
