Having completed three years full time study, I graduated from Dublin Institute of Technology in 1971 as an Architectural Technician. The summers of this period were spent gaining experience working in architect’s offices.
I then joined one of the big Dublin practices where I worked for approximately seventeen years until the slump of the late 1980s when the practice had to downsize resulting in a drastic reduction in staff members. While in this practice I worked on a number of commercial office developments and several large hospital projects.
In 1988, I joined Hamilton Young Architects where I could put my knowledge to good use without encountering the prejudices experienced in my previous employment. Having successfully handled two of the practices biggest commissions I was appointed an Associate and later made a full shareholding Director.
My role to day is mainly as a project manager leading young Architectural Technologists, Architectural Technicians and architects as the project requires.
My projects have included a €7.0 million office development, €100,000 refurbishment of a four storey office building, a €420,000 four classroom extension to a primary school and a €2.0 refurbishment and extension of a monastery.
