Case Study: LEUNG Hon-shing MCIAT

Having been in the building industry for over 30 years in the position of a Chartered Architectural Technologist, my career began in the Public Works Department of Hong Kong Government in the late 1970s. By that time, personal computers were first introduced into the society. Naturally, the building industry, like most other industries in the world benefited from the technology, also entered into the new digital era in 1980s. I joined the pilot team which mainly focused on the computerisation of my department and I also had the opportunity to join CIAT in the same period.

As an IT pioneer in the architectural field in those years, I had experienced the toughness and resistance when introducing the Computer-Aided-Design-Drafting technology into our field. The implementing of the CADD system, same as the other new technologies we faced nowadays, was extremely difficult to accept by comfort users despite its advantages. As an Architectural Technologist, I was obliged to investigate and explore the effectiveness of the new technology for the industry. The pilot team which I joined, selected some trial projects to evaluate the practicability of the new system. The team made use of the technology to evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy in drafting methods, 3D design and project management. In the process of evaluation, also established  standards for the local industry as a reference to cope with the international standards. After working all the complexity and vast effort from all participants, the new technology was finally implemented in our department. As a result, we became one of the leading architectural corporations that entered into the IT era.

The valuable experience on developing of IT technology has became an impetus to my career. I realise that we shall be conscious on new trend and technologies in order to keep abreast of the times in this modern world. I believe we also have to participate and contribute to the industry as pioneers in this fast moving world. My faith in keeping ahead is again inspired in the evolution of the Institute from SAAT to CIAT.
