Case Study: Steve Judd MCIAT

My experience of Architectural Technology, as a profession, are varied and colourful but predominantly good! I got into Architectural Technology via a non standard route having started as a trade apprentice in engineering design at Qualcast Derby Foundries in 1978. This was my first experience of practical construction and building draughting and I loved it. All that mud, foundry sand, sulphur, carbon and camaraderie!

I eventually moved to Rolls Royce and into the Architects Department. Again very traditional, but a great learning experience. It was here that I learnt to draw and design to a good standard and consolidated my architectural training. Before leaving I sat my professional interview and was accepted as a Full (later Chartered) Member of CIAT. I was always very passionate about our profession and couldn’t understand why this group of very talented professionals were not recognised on a par with our fellow ‘Chartered’ disciplines. So it was a tremendous thrill when at the age of 44, I finally became Chartered in an industry I’d served in for 27 years!

I’ve worked predominantly on major refurbishment works in an industrial setting. However, one of the new build jobs I worked on was the highlight of my career. As a Chartered Architectural Technologist, I was Supervision Officer on the construction of the Sir Henry Royce Centre in Derby. One of my roles was to work with the site agent to deliver this quality catering and exhibition centre. Unfortunately this building was destroyed by fire and has been raised to the ground!

I now work at Jacobs Babtie as Technical Director.
