Revival Buildings: The Sustainable Way

05 Mar 2008

The purpose of the conference is to highlight the issues and solutions in non-domestic building refurbishment, with the aim to reduce energy consumption and other environmental impacts, based on the demonstration case studies taking part in the REVIVAL project.

The EU supported REVIVAL project was set up in 2002 to address one of the main challenges facing cities across Europe:

How do we deal with our existing building stock and make it suitable for the 21st century?
Five buildings were targeted, a school and four office buildings, across five countries. All shared the common characteristics of poor insulation standards, an over-provision of un-insulated and unshaded glazing, inefficient lighting, poor internal comfort conditions, inefficient HVAC plant and degraded fabric. All have now been refurbished using innovative, sustainable techniques in combination with more established methods to improve energy performance and provide an environment with high standards of comfort and pleasant surroundings. The success of the project demonstrates that existing tertiary buildings can be refurbished economically, with significant improvements in energy performance that will lead to reduced CO2 emissions and contribute towards the EU goal of meeting the Kyoto Protocol.

There will be presentations at the conference on REVIVAL from experts in the field of sustainable building from different countries, and others such as Nick Barnard, the developer of the Cooldeck system installed at the Daneshill House Council offices in Stevenage as an alternative to the traditional air conditioning system. There will also be other presentations on energy activities in Cambridge and UK refurbishment developments.

This conference will be held at Queens College in Cambridge, details of the venue can be seen on their website at www.queensconferences.com  The number of participants is limited so if you are interested in attending, please contact me as soon as possible. The conference will take place from 09.15 to 17.00, a programme pack, lunch and other light refreshments during the day will be provided. Details of the conference are available on the REVIVAL website, at www.revival-eu.net
