BRE publishes The Green Guide to Specification
The Green Guide to Specification is an easy-to-use publication from BRE (Building Research Establishment), providing guidance for specifiers, designers and their clients on the relative environmental impacts of over 250 elemental specifications for roofs, walls, floors etc.
Environmental ratings of these specifications are based on Life Cycle Assessment using the Environmental Profiles methodology and its Addendum. This methodology was developed by BRE with funding from DETR and support from a wide range of construction manufacturing trade associations.
Individual manufacturers can now obtain certified Environment Profiles which allow their products to be compared to the generic profiles - see www.bre.co.uk/envprofiles. In the forthcoming electronic edition, individual company profiles will be shown alongside the generic profiles.
The current editions of the commercial Green Guide to Specification are sponsored by the Post Office and the Green Guide to Housing Specification is sponsored by NHBC. Both are used within the BREEAM schemes (www.breeam.org) to provide materials credits.
