The prestigious CIAT Student Award for Technical Excellence in Architectural Technology has been awarded to Jonathan McGee, from Sheffield Hallam University, for the design of the first carbon-neutral ‘school of the future’.
The Award is specifically designed to recognise technical excellence by students on an Accredited BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology programme. Entrants must demonstrate their achievement of technical excellence in construction by illustrating the composition of ideas put into practice and presented in a working format.
The Award, which includes a prize of £750 and a trophy, will be presented at a ceremony later this year.
Announcing the winner, Professor Sam Allwinkle PPBIAT MCIAT, Chairman of the judging panel, said ‘The entries for this year’s Award have been of an exceptionally high standard. With a notable 35% increase in its entries, the Award has become very competitive amongst our student members. Sheffield Hallam University must be highly commended for the quality of work submitted by its students and by integrating this award into the final year of the undergraduate Architectural Technology programme to form part of the assessment.’
The judges made the following statement on the winning entry; ‘Jonathan’s entry had an innovative design concept looking at “a box within a box”, which linked through to a workable technical solution, with robust and energy efficient details. A well researched presentation and clear scheme — an excellent submission.’
Second Prize (Highly Commended) was awarded to Jacob Ware, Sheffield Hallam University and Third Prize (Commended) was awarded to both Conor Cunningham and Adam Hills from Sheffield Hallam for their Abbeydale Grange school of the future projects.
