Construction and Refurbishment: Building a Future

29 Oct 2008

The Barbican, London - 20 November 2008

Speaking at Construction & Refurbishment 07 last year, Joe Cavanagh, Lead Director on the National Audit Office's 'Building for the Future' report, said that progress in the area of sustainable construction and refurbishment was "pretty grim" in that only 9% of Government Construction & Refurbishment projects could be demonstrated to meet the expected standards.

Much work needed to be done, and one year on much has changed. Sustainable procurement is building pace, the new Display Energy Certificate for public buildings was made compulsory in October, and much progress is being made in the areas of green refurbishment and microgeneration. Do we now have a fighting chance of meeting the targets set or is the government still failing to achieve in this area?

In June, the new cross-government Strategy for Sustainable Construction was unveiled. Construction & Refurbishment: 08 will focus on what is being done by government as a whole, in creating sustainable practice in government construction and refurbishment projects.

The day will be chaired by procurement specialist Colin Cram, former Chief Executive of the North West Centre for Excellence, who also has a unique perspective, having been a founder member of the Central Unit on Purchasing, the forerunner of the OGC.
