CIRIA's autumn conferences being held on 3 and 4 of October at the Church House Conference Centre, Westminster, London. Day one will be focussing on environmental issues and is entitled Delivering sustainable construction on site. Day two is the annual contaminated land conference this year entitled Land regeneration - a time of change. A brief outline of each of the conferences is given below:
Day 1: Delivering sustainable construction on site (Sponsored by: Bywaters, Envirowise, Bureau Veritas; supported by CIEF and Forum for the Future)
The conference will take a strategic look at the challenges and opportunities for delivering sustainable construction with prominent speakers from the construction industry. The keynote speech will be delivered by Dr David Strong, Board Member of the UK Green Building Council which will outline how it aims to become a major voice for industry and deliver its mission "to dramatically improve the sustainability of the built environment by radically transforming the way it is planned, designed, constructed, maintained and operated".
Other speakers at the conference include Tricia Henton, Director of Environment Protection, Environment Agency and Martin Hunt, Head of Built Environment, Forum for the Future. There will also be morning and afternoon workshop sessions covering a range of topics including climate change - the challenges for construction and enhancing ecology and biodiversity on construction sites.
Day 2: Land regeneration - a time of change (Sponsored by: Halcrow, WRAP, A Proctor Group, Card Geotechnics Ltd, Environmental Services Ltd, GroundSure)
The conference will clarify the UK policy and guidance on risk management and will explore how the forthcoming Government and Environment Agency initiatives and various EU Environmental Directives will affect contaminated land practitioners in UK. The event will also examine wider issues such as soil and waste management practice on sites as well as how the planning regime can work more successfully with Part IIA legislation. The event will provide opportunities for practitioners to update their knowledge of new legislation such as Part IIA for contamination of radioactive substance as well as a forum to discuss different approaches for remediation including common contaminants such as hydrocarbons and metals, and more difficult materials such as hazardous ground gases and contaminants generated from coalfields etc.
Speakers at the conference include a keynote speech from Barbara Young, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency and Steve Griffiths, Policy Adviser, Defra. There will also be morning and afternoon workshop sessions covering a range of topics including the extension of Part IIA to cover radioactivity and dealing with coalfields.
