Designing spaces between buildings

Venue: New Hall, Huntingdon Road, Cambridge
Date: Thursday 7 February 2008, 13:15-17:00

Roads, pavements, parks, gardens, play area, pedestrian precincts. These spaces, now increasingly becoming known as the 'Public Realm', are some of the spaces between buildings that should be so important to us - yet they are often just left to happen. All too common are aimless unattractive and unsafe open spaces, roads are a clutter of unintelligible road signs and confusion, car parks a desert of tarmac. The design of these spaces needs to be appropriate, effective, safe, sustainable and a delight to use and be in.

This afternoon seminar will explore the issues and show the important role that designers, planners and engineers must have to contribute to improving this valuable asset. The seminar will include:

  • Overview of the issues
  • Types of spaces, their requirements and problems
  • Land ownership issues
  • Legal and planning implications
  • Traffic and parking
  • Sustainable issues
  • Security of people and property
  • Urban and rural solutions
  • The roles of designers, planners and engineers working together to achieve success
  • Cambridge Design Guide and Integration of Engineering in Urban Design
  • Design Codes and the importance of coding the Public Realm
  • Example of current development
